IL GRANDE BELZONI by Walter VENTURI

Comic strip in Italian whose main character is Giovanni Battista Belzoni. Belzoni was an italian excavator, explorer and adventurer. Born in 1778, in Padua, into a poor family, his father was a barber.

In 1814 he met Muhammed Ali who suggested that he should go to Egypt. Here he got to know with Burckhardt and Drovetti. He used to excavate antique sites. For example, he worked on the reopening of the temples at Abu Simbel. In all, he discovered six royal tombs in the Theban area, the most important being that of Sety I.

On May 1819, he went on an expedition to the oases. After six days of travelling, he arrived at the oasis of Bahariya, which he thought was the oasis of Jupiter Amun mentioned by Classical authors. He never reached Siwa!

It is a French novel. Part of the plot takes place in Siwa, in the near future.
